LibriVox recording of The Vanishing Man by R. Austin Freeman.
Read in English by Nicholas Clifford
A young doctor, former student of the legal and medical expert Dr. John Thorndyke, finds himself almost accidentally drawn into a case in which a man has vanished. Perhaps he has died; perhaps not;but the issue is very important because the will that he has left behind is curiously -- annoyingly curiously -- worded. Fortunately, Dr. Thorndyke's rationality combined with his forensic skills, bring the case to a conclusion, while the young doctor meets the love of his life in the Egyptian rooms of the British Museum. ( Nicholas Cifford)

OK, so I instantly became a fan while listening to The Uttermost Farthing. R. Austin Freeman combines medical and legal knowledge in a way that seems far ahead of his time.
There was a lot of humor in The Vanishing Man. The inquest scene could have been written by Dickens. The love interest grew quite normally from the plot, and the couple seemed just right for each other. The ending was rather predictable I'm sorry to say.
Nicholas Clifford's reading was, as always, very good.
